How to strum a bass without using a pick?

The way he was doing it, spread your fingers out, open palm, slam on the bass (but not an actual "slam", more of like a slam/brush on the bass). But you would usually use curled fingers and basically tap on the bass (which, in bass terms, would be considered a "strum").
