Guitar Strumming Question?

Okay so i have been learning to play guitar and i been learning a few songs. I dont think im strumming right and when i watch covers on youtube i see the persons hand just going up and down. Should i be constantly strumming up and down and miss the strings when i need to or should i only strum to hit the notes?
