Hair weave/ sew in extensions help and advice please?

i have been debating getting a hair weave on the bottom half of my head for length and thickness for ages as sick to death of using clip ins and i have had bad experiences with glue in ones. my hair is quite damaged atm and some people say a weave will help as that hair will be plaited away ad wont get brushed More damaged so easy and others say will make worst so what do you let think? ideally i want my own hair to grow long again but that will take a while and clip ins get annoying so people give me any advice on sew in ones please? also how long do you leave them in for, btw im a white english 20 year old just in case people wondered as different ethnicity's have different natural hair x
